Der folgende Text ist auf english. Ich habe ihn auf einer anderen Plattform geschrieben. Ich denke, dass diejenigen, welche der Text interessieren könnte, genügend Englisch beherrschen.

Ich reihe in hauptsächlich unter Politik ein. Denn Forschung passiert heute hauptsächlich dort, wo entweder kommerzielle oder politische Interessen vertreten werden.

We don't need mathematics !!!!

Just this morning I read an article about hard disks. A very nice article that describes the functioning of a hard disk and future developments.

I read that the maximum capacity of one disk is 1.4 TB at the moment. (There are more than one disk in one unit, therefore 10 TB are possible in a single housing.) Let us assume that you can by 5 TB for 250 €. (5 Terabyte)

I remember that 5 MB cost around 2500€ in 1990. So let us make a calculation. 2500€ / 250$ would be a price that is 10 times less than it was. But we also have to compare the size: 5 TB / 5 MB is how much? Do you know: 5.000.000.000.000 / 5.000.000 = ? Yes, that is a million. We can conclude that the price of data storage nowadays has been reduced by a factor of 10 millions. If we also account for the form factor, i.e. the volume of the storage, we probably could get to a factor of 100 millions.

But I have also read in this article that by the year 2025 they are expecting data storage capacity of 100 Terabyte in one hard disk housing, as we know it today. (3,5";)

Who needs that data capacity? CERN, but they have found different methods to spread their abundance of data to a set of machines. Simulations of suns and weather? That is possible but unlikely in the handling capacity of this data for compound mathematical examination.

NSA or similar organisations? Yes, I think they might need it. Even if the storage might be only usable for a few years.

You don't need a lot of mathematics, to detect the political impact of the results of research in those fields.

But maybe a little bit, just to be able to read between the lines )
